Auricular Therapy

by Amy Kreydin

Tiny points on the ear reflect your body from head to toe. By using finger pressure or delicate penetration with acupuncture needles the body is encouraged to find balance in mind, body and spirit. Pierced ears stimulate a related body part, you can wear gold earrings in the center of the lobes to strengthen eyes, or wear silver earrings in the center of the lobes to soothe eyes. In some countries piercing ones ears are encouraged before prescription glasses are suggested, with the assumption that the constant stimulus from the earring will correct the vision complaint.

To give yourself Ear Reflexology briskly rub hands together to warm, or run hands under warm tap water. Cup your palms over both ears and hold for 15 seconds or more. Using gentle pressure at first take the lobes between your thumb, index and middle fingers and gently pull while stroking. In this hand position your thumb will be on the backside of the lobe while your index and middle fingers are on the front. Do this 5-10 strokes and then move upward on the outer cartilage of the ear, pressing gently as you go, until your hand hold becomes awkward (about half-way up or so). Rotate your elbows away from the body and turn your hand so that the thumb is now on the front of the ear and the two fingers are behind. Finish where you left off going up arching over, stopping where the ear attaches to the head. Now using your middle finger make small, gentle circles over the whole front of the ear, using caution not to press the finger into the ear cavity. Pause at places that feel tender or sensitive and consider using the thumb to support the back of the ear for better concentration on a sore point.

Mothers of young children have used Ear Reflexology to help with insomnia, nervous tension and hyperactivity at bedtime. Later in adulthood these individuals find Ear Reflexology incredibly relaxing and find themselves pinching, rubbing or pulling on their ears during high-stress moments.
